  • Molding of EPS
    Additionally, there are two primary methods for molding EPS:
    1) One-step extrusion method, in which foamed EPS particles are hot-extruded immediately. The majority of sheets and films are produced using this technique;
    2) Air (or water vapor) is pre-foamed 30 to 50 times at 100 degrees Celsius and then allowed to mature for 24 hours. The pre-foamed material is then put in an aluminum mold or casting and heated to 115 to 120 degrees Celsius. Heat is applied to the air (or water vapor) at °C, and when the material expands, the surfaces of the particles fuse with one another to produce a foam plastic portion.

    Transport and Storage
    Although EPS products are generally safe and non-toxic, raw materials in various processing phases can provide risks. The skin and respiratory tract might become irritated by polystyrene powder. Pentane, which is highly combustible and can create explosive combinations with air, is released as vapors from EPS particles during storage. Styrene monomer, a dangerous chemical, may be released during heating of polymers made of polystyrene.

E.P.S. (Expandable Poly Styrene) is a lightweight, rigid, plastic foam insulation material produced from solid particles of polystyrene. Expansion is achieved by virtue of small amounts of pentane gas dissolved into the polystyrene base material during production. The gas expands under the action of heat, applied as steam, to form perfectly closed cells of EPS. These cells occupy approximately 40 times the volume of the original polystyrene bead. The EPS beads are then molded into appropriate forms suited to their application. Products made from foamed polystyrene are nearly ubiquitous, for example packing materials, insulation, and foam drink cups.
